Crowtrees Heritage Group was formed in September 2007 by a group of people interested in the local landscape, the history, the heritage and the leisure opportunities. The focus of interest was the Crowtrees Local Nature Reserve which was established in 2002 as an amenity for Quarrington Hill and the surrounding villages. Discovering the countryside and historical heritage of the area became a priority and a unifying factor for a wide range of interests. The ecology, geology, history and archaeology were inter-related and provided a wealth of material for both research and survey.
A booklet on Crowtrees Heritage Trails had already been published and had created wide interest in the history of the former Crowtrees Colliery and its links to the surrounding coalfields. There were many questions to be answered and the Group decided to look at the history of the landscape.
