Since it opened its doors in 1908 Annfield Plain library has been at the heart of its community and has provided an important cultural and educational service to the people of Annfield Plain and surrounding areas.

It has served and supported it through two world wars; weathered the economic depression of the 1920’s and 1930’s; and coped with the decline and eventual demise of the mining industry in North-West Durham.

Now as it celebrates its centenary members of that same community have come together to offer their help and support in the form of the Friends of Annfield Plain Library.

The library was built with the help of funds from the millionaire industrialist and philanthropist Andrew Carnegie and is now the only Carnegie library left in County Durham.
